Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga is a method created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984. It is a vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness.

The name Jivamukti means liberation while living. It is taken from the Sanskrit term, Jivanmuktih, which is used to describe the state of enlightenment.

Jivamukti classes focus on a theme, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to yogic texts, music, spoken word, asana sequencing and yogic breathing practices. The average Jivamukti student is more educated about the philosophy of yoga than most yoga teachers.

The Jivamukti method of Yoga is one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga.

Yoga Dojo specializes in Jivamukti Yoga which is a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings. Its founders are Sharon Gannon & David Life who are based in new York.

There are five tenets which are the foundation of Jivamukti Yoga, these are:

Ahimsa

A nonviolent, compassionate lifestyle extending to other animals, the environment and all living beings

Bhakti

Acknowledgment that self-realization and liberation is the goal of all yoga practices

Dhyana

Meditation

Nada

The development of a sound body and mind through deep listening

Shastra

Study of the ancient yogic teachings.
